Two states, one kitchen
South Indian cooking from Chennai to Hyderabad
Chennai 2 Hyderabad is an Indian restaurant in Mira Mesa, San Diego, and a South Indian one at that. Most Indian restaurants here cook north of the Vindhyas; we serve two distinct southern kitchens side by side — the Tamil Nadu table and the Andhra & Telangana one — under a single roof on Camino Ruiz.
That means a filter-coffee-and-idli breakfast and a fiery Andhra curry can land on the same table, and both taste like they were made by someone from that place.
From Tamil Nadu
Chennai tiffins — dosas crisped to order, idlis, medu vada and filter coffee. Chettinad chicken and goat curries, Chennai chicken varuval, and the Dindigul-style Thalapakatti biryani.
From Andhra & Telangana
Hyderabadi dum biryani, Hyderabad chicken 65, kodi vepudu and majestic chicken, talawa gosht, and the coastal heat of a Vijayawada biryani. Andhra food in San Diego, cooked properly.
Serving Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Sorrento Valley, University City, Rancho Peñasquitos and the wider San Diego area — dine in, takeout and delivery.
The biryani counter
Five regions, one Mira Mesa kitchen
“Biryani” is not one dish. Hyderabad seals it and cooks it dum; Dindigul uses seeraga samba rice, short-grained and dense; Vijayawada brings the chilli; Madras goes gentler on the whole spices; and Bhai Veetu is the one cooked at home rather than in a shop. We cook them as separate dishes because they are separate dishes.
Hyderabadi Chicken Dum Biryani
Sealed and slow-cooked dum-style, the way Hyderabad does it.
Thalapakatti Mutton Biryani
The Dindigul classic — seeraga samba rice, short-grained and fragrant.
Madras Chicken & Mutton Biryani
Tamil Nadu's gentler, spice-forward style.
Thalapakatti Chicken Biryani
The same Dindigul rice and masala, lighter and quicker — the lunch order.
Vijayawada Chicken, Egg, Fish & Paneer Biryani
Coastal Andhra heat, unapologetically — in four.
Bhai Veetu Chicken Biryani
The Chennai home-style one: gentle, aromatic, no heavy hand with the chilli.
Bucket Biryani for four
Chicken, mutton, paneer, egg or fish — sized for the whole table.
